A short visit to Taittinger: Champagne, Cathedrals and Comtes

At the end of last month, Hayley Wright from our team was fortunate to be part of a group from Majestic Wine chosen to visit Champagne Taittinger. Here is her report:

Lay Wheeler, 2002 Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut, TaittingerAfter 13 hours travelling on Tuesday 26th June and a quick 20 minute turnaround at the hotel in Reims before heading back out for dinner at the stunning Château de la Marquetterie, I have never been so happy to be handed a cool glass of champagne!  However, it was more than worth the wait, as we were greeted with the 2000 Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs, an absolutely stunning wine – delicate and subtle, with delicious notes of honeysuckle and brioche, with fine bubbles forming a delightfully fine mousse.  In all honesty, I lost interest in the fine feast to follow, but we were presented with five delicious courses and champagnes to match, including Prelude Grand Cru and ‘Folies de la Marquetterie’, which is produced from grapes grown on site at the Château.  All very delectable, but I could have quite happily sat with my (never-ending, naturally) glass of Comtes 2000 and foregone the banquet!

Day two began with a visit to Reims cathedral, followed by a tour of Taittinger’s beautiful 13th century cellars.  I’m not really one for sightseeing, but I make an exception here – the cellars were surreal, slightly eerie and absolutely fascinating.  The icing on the cake came at the end of the tour, in the form of the Brut Millésimé 2005 – unfailingly Taittinger in its elegant, rich and creamy style. There was yet more food  at the press house just down the road, with an opportunity to taste the 2004 Rosé Comtes – a perfect match for the summer fruit dessert; then reluctantly back on the road for the journey back home.  I would have loved some more Comtes 2000, but felt it would have been inappropriate to ask for ‘one for the road’…

Now I just need to source a sample of the Comtes 2002 – reportedly one of the best champagne vintages of the last couple of decades – could the Comtes 2002 be a legend in the making?  If the 2000 is anything to go by, then I suspect yes.
