A sneak preview of 2011 Bordeaux

Bordeaux 2011 en primeur Preview Tasting

It has been a frantic and tiring couple of weeks for the winemakers of the Cercle Rive Droite, the 10 year old association of a number of Châteaux from the right bank of the region. They have been travelling around the world, showing their 2011’s (in many cases alongside their 2009’s or 2008’s), and after New York last week, it was London’s turn with yesterday’s tasting in Piccadilly.

This seemed a perfect opportunity to get a sneak preview of the style of the vintage in preparation for the Primeurs week early April, so off I went to the Big Smoke to get my Merlot fix. The Meridien Hotel in Piccadilly provided a lovely environment for this purpose, despite the somewhat inconsistent lighting.

First impressions are actually better than I expected. The better wines had a lovely freshness and perfume which made me think they should be excellent drinking wines with medium-term ageing potential. There were some real successes dotted across the room where the winemakers managed to get those pretty characters combined with good concentration levels and power. It is of course much too early to draw any conclusions about the vintage, but I for one am looking forward to the primeurs week for a chance to taste some more. Until then…
