A Majestic Tasting

Given the opportunity to attend Majestic Wine’s annual management conference yesterday I jumped at Etienne de Montille 2010 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Le Cailleretsthe chance, not least for the insights to be gained on many of the exciting developments planned over the next twelve months across all areas of the Majestic group. Having previously attended for many years as a Majestic store manager I was particularly looking forward to the finale of the conference, the buyers tasting. Besides offering the perfect opportunity to catch up with a few old faces, the range of wines available to taste was varied and interesting. Inevitably, the star of the show was a Lay & Wheeler offering, presented by our buyer Nick Dagley. Having tasted the 2010 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Le Caillerets at the domaine with Etienne de Montille last November, I knew we were in for a treat. The 2009 displays wonderful purity and a touch of exotic richness on the nose, the tightly wound palate shows lively citrus fruit to the fore with an underlying creamy richness of texture and a crisp mineral vein which flows through to the seamless finish. Given the stylistic differences between the two vintages I was impressed at how well defined the terroir was expressed in both examples from this highly regarded producer.
