Rhône 2010 – Decanter Update

While we whole-heartedly believe in the quality of the Rhône 2010 vintage, it is always good to have one’s pronouncements seconded by others. So, we were pleased to read in Decanter this week that John LivinRhone 2010, Lay & Wheeler, John Livingstone-Learmonthgstone-Learmonth  has given the vintage in the Northern Rhône rave reviews:

“Here is a rare vintage – one so good that it merits comparison beyond its physical attributes. 2010 is a maestro vintage, a year whose quality is perhaps best captured by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, in his Piano Concerto 20 in D minor, K466. The second movement, the romanze, offers the delight of the piano’s pristine, romantic clarity, surrounded by the ebb and flow of the violins and the orchestra. As I listened to it recently, I thought of Côte-Rôtie 2010 – the piano representing the quality of the fruit, the orchestral waves the tannins, the two locked in a celestial harmony.”

Waxing lyrical (or melodious) indeed, but it is an excellent way of expressing the balance and power of this vintage, which is both incredibly restrained, yet expressively elegant and harmonious, particularly amongst the violet-scented Northern Rhônes.

He went onto give scores for some of the top wines of the vintage, including the following from our own range:
