2010 German Wines: Dr. Loosen, Fritz Haag and Weingut Leitz

2010 was a difficult vintage in both the Mosel and the Rheingau, where, due to dramatic swings in the weather throughout the year, producers were met with a number of challenges and extremely low yields. However, for the best producers, the resultant wines, though very small in quantity, are brilliantly concentrated, extraordinarily dense with enormous extract and sensational balance.

Following a visit to Germany to taste the vintage, we have chosen wines from two prominent estates in the Mosel:  Dr Loosen and Fritz Haag.  Both producers are masters of their trade, producing fine, fruity and delicate Riesling with unmistakable character, reflecting their own unique terroir in this dramatic landscape.

We have also been lucky enough to secure a small parcel from Josef Leitz in the Rheingau, who was awarded the prestigious Gault Millau Winemaker of the Year 2010.  The wines, from the south-facing slopes above the village of Rüdesheim, offer exceptional diversity and capture the outstanding quality of the vintage.
