Chapoutier Sélections Parcellaires 2010 and Wine of the Day

Wine is my passion and I really love my job. Even so, some days are better than others and when I found myself walking in Mayfair on a sunny afternoon, on my way to a tutored tasting of Michel Chapoutier’s top wines with the man himself, I cannot pretend to have been anything less than excited.

It turned out to have been a deserved level of expectation, as the wines were absolutely amazing. All were great, and the top wines would happily sit on a dinner table next to Bordeaux first growths and Burgundy Grand Crus and have nothing to be ashamed of. In my eye, their principal characteristic is fabulous length, followed closely by outstanding balance and a very elegant and savoury edge. To quote Michel “fruit is to wine what disco is to music”: this does not mean to say there is no fruit in his wines, but rather that he aims to develop the complexity and elegance of his wines alongside their fruit, rather than attempt to produce fruit bombs that shine in tastings but do not always deliver pleasure over time.

His sélections parcellaires wines are all from biodynamic single vineyards, and the utmost care, attention to detail and expertise are poured into them to produce these stunning bottles. The quantities are minute and going fast, so I would advise having a look at the offer now so as to avoid missing out!

We could not resist adding this Bordeaux to our wine of the day selection. It is one of the most elegant St Emilions, and the 2005 is an outstanding wine, only 4 or 5 years away from entering its drinking window.
