Bordeaux Grand Cru Classés Tasting

On the 4th of May, Victoria Chaplin and Paula Wenman, two of our team of Wine Advisors, attended the Bordeaux Grand Crus Classés 2007-2010 tasting at Somerset House in London.

This was a great opportunity to taste a wide range of great Bordeaux, including some from the 2010 vintage – many of which were showing even better than at the tastings in Bordeaux in April. Proof, if proof were needed, that tasting the en primeur wines so early is a challenging business.

We asked Victoria and Paula to select two highlights from the tasting:

Pontet Canet was the first table that we decided to visit and was fantastic – a definite star of the tasting. We started with the 2010 vintage and tasted back to 2007. All the vintages showed extremely well and ably demonstrated how this wine evolves, proving it has great structure and consistency each vintage. It is an overwhelmingly elegant and fruit driven style and definitely showed its class.

[We do have a small volume of the 2007 vintage available; call 01473 313300 for more details.]

Another outstanding wine was the Le G de Guiraud 2010. A dry wine made by the Sauternes producer Château Guiraud, it is an absolutely stunning wine, with a perfumed floral nose. Almond notes evident on the palate, very well integrated, crisp and refreshing. A wonderful reflection of terroir! A real winner, this is now available at just £78 for 12 bottles in bond.

Other notable wines included:

2010 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc – Stunning nose of tropical fruit and grapefruit. On the palate, sweet pineapple and green fruit notes – utterly delicious!

2010 Château Gazin
Big bold and lovely at this early stage!  Liquorice, herbal noseChocolate and dark cherry on the palate, perfect balance.
[This is now available to purchase online.]

2010 Château Canon – Quite a difference between 2010, 2009 and 2008 vintages, but exceptional in all three.

2010 and 2009 Branaire-Ducru – Truly fantastic
