2006 Piemonte – A modern classic

Our 2006 Piemonte offer is now online, offering the finest Barolo and Barbaresco from some of the region’s greatest producers. We are also pleased to be able to offer a first-view of the 2007 vintage from greats such as Boglietti and Piero Busso.

2006 is a vintage with a growing reputation. The wines seem to be improving all the time in bottle and have everything they need to become modern-day classics. It is not a vintage without issues; there was some hail, badly affecting the commune of La Morra, Renato Corino did not make any wine from his Arborina vineyard and Bruno Giacosa took the decision not to bottle any wine, which may have had more to do with difficulties outside his vineyards. Despite these factors, some truly outstanding wines have been produced in 2006. These are pure and highly perfumed wines with the intensity and freshness of structure that is the trademark of Nebbiolo. It is a vintage in the mould of 96, 99, 01 and 04, combining power and poise; a year for the cellar, which, in time, will deliver the complex, unique flavours that make these wines so special.

Piemonte is one of the great wine regions of the world, yet all of the estates we deal with have kept a tight lid on their prices and some have even reduced them thanks to poor sales in America. Generally these are unassuming people, who produce a small range of wines from vineyards which surround their house. They understand their land intimately and, whilst respecting tradition, are striving to make better and better use of it with every new vintage. These are wonderful wines, offering incredible value and with the ability to age dramatically well.
