Bordeaux 2009 Release: Pagodes de Cos

While Cos d’Estournel itself is a massive and controversial wine in 2009, there seems to be less debate about the style and extremely high quality of its second wine. Les Pagodes de Cos in this vintage is widely regarded as being of similar quality to many a vintage of the Grand Vin. It harmoniously marries ripe density of blackcurrant and damson fruit to a long, mineral freshness and fine tannic structure. Very accomplished winemaking makes for a serious wine worthy of inclusion in any collection of 2009s.

2009 Les Pagodes de Cos, St-Estèphe
£198 per case of 6 bottles in bond

As 56% of the estate’s total production went into the ‘Grand Vin’, 44% found its way into this year’s Pagodes, the second wine from Cos d’Estournel. In fact, were we impressed with most such second wines this year – testament to the fruit-quality throughout. This was very perfumed and spicy, with slightly grippy tannins, which will require some cellaring.
