2009 Bordeaux New Releases – Moulin Riche and Le Crock

After the relative quiet of the last few weeks, today made a refreshing change, with a flurry of new releases, including several of the wines that were on our original shopping list. First off the blocks was Château Ormes de Pez, a perennial Lay & Wheeler favourite from St-Estèphe, which we offered this morning. This was followed closely by Châteaux Moulin Riche and Le Crock, both of which are managed by Didier Cuvelier and his team, who are also responsible for Leoville-Poyferré (one of Robert Parker’s highest scoring wines in this vintage).

2009 Château Moulin-Riche, St-Julien
£185 per case of 12 bottles in bond
Appealing on the nose, with a cool, fresh blackcurrant note. The palate shows a good core of ripe, vibrant, dark berry fruit and a hint of toast. This is an elegant and refined Moulin-Riche, with a compact nature that contrasts with some of the more exuberant St-Juliens. A lovely wine and sure to offer excellent value. Drinking: 2014-2020

2009 Château Le Crock, Cru Bourgeois St-Estèphe
£168 per case of 12 bottles in bond
From the Cuvelier stable than produces Léoville Poyferré, the ‘Cru Bourgeois’ Le Crock is one of the best properties within that designation. With vineyards close to Montrose and Cos D’Estournel, it certainly punches above its weight and has a strong family resemblance to the family’s more exalted wines. Spicy, overtly fruity and with a rich finish. Drinking: 2014-2020
