2009 Bordeaux: Suduiraut Releases

Two new releases from Bordeaux 2009 to start the working week. The first is a Lay & Wheeler favourite from the lesser-known Montagne-St-Emilion appellation. Château Montaiguillon has the generosity and plush texture that are characteristic of this vintage and will make for delicious mid-week drinking in a couple of years’ time.

Another example of the superb value that vintages such as 2009 can provide from less glamorous appellations. We buy direct from the Château, where Chantal and her team say this is the best wine they have ever made. Fragrant nose of crushed, raspberry, cherry and fruitcake-spice, the palate is ripe and sophisticated, with fine-grained tannins, well-integrated oak and a long, savoury finish. 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon bring balance to the opulent Merlot. Drink: 2012-2016

We were deeply impressed with Château Suduiraut, which we believe is one of the great Sauternes of the vintage. It was given a 97-99 point score (the highest of the Sauternes apart from Doisy Daene L’Extravagant) by Neal Martin of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, who said: “One of the outstanding successes of the 2009 vintage, this may surpass the superlative 2007. It has a more understated nose at the moment… is very well balanced, very powerful with great depth and effervescent minerality. Layers of botrytis layer across the mellifluous finish that is beautifully defined and sensuous. Fabulous.”

A scented nose of marmalade and almonds, with a subtle hint of desiccated coconut.  On the palate there is lovely intensity and freshness to the honeyed fruit, dried apricot and subtle notes of marzipan. This wine has beautiful balance and texture. It is rich yet refined; intense yet still elegant. Delicious. Drink: 2015-2030
